Listen up! For all of you who admire wolves, love wolves, or at least don't want to see the beautiful race of creatures turn into a muddled shadow of what they used to be, take a look at this link!
In March, President Obama's Interior Department approved the Bush Administration's discredited plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana.
And now, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has announced it will begin selling an estimated
70,000 permits to hunt and kill wolves in Idaho, allowing 220 wolves to be killed starting on September 1st in the first-ever state regulated hunt of
gray wolves in the continental United States.
No, they aren't talking about Timber wolves, Tundra wolves, or even Arctic wolves. We're talking GREY wolves. The ones that have been on the endangered, risk-of-extinction list for years.
Idaho's announcement comes on the heels of Montana's plan to hunt 75 wolves starting in October. These numbers would be over and above the wolves already killed each year by other means of lethal control, as well as natural deaths. All these actions combined threaten the recovery of the still vulnerable regional wolf population in the Northern Rockies.
Lets face it, people like ALPHA wolves as trophies. Not omegas, not lones, not subordinates. Alphas. Because the alphas are the only pair in a wolf pack allowed to breed, if someone killed an alpha for a trophy, the whole pack order would be screwed up. The alpha male/female will fight/be fought over by the rest of the pack, possibly killing more wolves than a hunter might.
Another fact: Alpha wolves are from two separate packs, and most commonly, all of the subordinate wolves are cousins, brothers, sisters, and pups of the alphas. If one alpha goes missing, interbreeding most likely
will cause genetic defects in the wolves.
Those defects can range from things as small as an extra dew-claw, to as major issues as extreme aggression, fearlessness, or missing bones internally, which can cause vital organ failure, the lacking ability to run/chase prey, and/or weakness when hunting or faced with the challenge of a coyote or bear.
If you even by the
slightest admire the wolves as a individual, as a species, as a
race, you would at least spread the word, or even better, help us out by signing the petition. I have, and I'm really relying on you guys to do that, too.
The very species is literally in our hands, we can save it, or let it slip through our fingers. Permanently. What's your choice?
